About us - david

David Hewitson has been involved in mine action, ordnance disposal and stockpile management projects for more than twenty years, working at every level from hands on field operations through the establishment and development of international organisations to involvement in standard setting bodies and authorities.  He has worked in or with the majority of mine affected countries.

He was head of the first demining organisation to formally adopt ISO 9001 within mine clearance and ordnance disposal projects in 1997 and has been a leader in the promotion of quality management principles and systems within the industry ever since.  The organisations he founded employed up to 3,500 staff in projects and programmes worldwide.  More recently he was instrumental in implementing ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 within Fenix, and is involved in current work on the implementation of formal environmental management systems within mine action programmes.

He now works with international organisations and institutions, as well as national governments, developing operational management systems for survey, clearance, disassembly and disposal of munitions, including safety, quality and environmental aspects.  He has also authored a number of international standards relating to operational and quality management in mine action, EOD and ordnance disposal.

As a qualified quality auditor, and with a degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, he brings a strong analytical approach to the definition, monitoring and management of operational systems, combined with extensive experience in the practicalities of managing people and organisations in real world situations.

Prior to becoming involved in ordnance related programmes he spent six years as an Officer in the Royal Navy, serving in surface ships and submarines.
